A Simple Solution for Ajax SEO Problem

One of the major problems of Ajax is that search engines can not recognize JavaScript, so any contents that appear in your page using Ajax are not indexed. This article shows an easy solution to work-around this problem.

Suppose that you want to make a JavaScript event onclick to open a new layer in your page (eg. Index.html) that retrieves a page from your server using Ajax request.

Steps:

-         Create the page that your ajax code requests for example “page1.php”

-         In index.php in the link update the onclick with your ajax event (onclick=”showpage(’page1.php’); return false;”.

-         Type the url in the href = “page1.php”

The code in href is used only by the search engine crawler and the onclick will be used by normal browser so your contents are all indexed..

Important Note:

Make a server side redirection from page1.php to index.php if page1.php is requested directly not from ajax request.

How to choose an Ajax Framework ?

More than 500 Ajax Frameworks have appeared this year. Choosing a framework is a critical operation as your project’s features; development time and maintenance highly depends on it.
For lists of frameworks, good starting points are Wikipedia and the great Ajax Patterns or Ajax Projects .

These are a short list of questions to ask yourself about the frameworks you’re looking for, before going any further :

server independant or not ?
server independant frameworks will help you in mashing-up server technologies and lowly ties your software architecture while server dependant frameworks may increase your productivity but makes difficult major changes to your projects.

structural Javascript enhancements ?
Javascript can become a maze if your team does not share a common development methodology . There are so many ways of doing the same thing ( like creating objects of accessing the DOM ) in JS, that you must formalize the way to do it. Such a framework may help via on-demand Javascript, packaging abilities, enhanced OOP…

re-usability of your written components ?
making use of it shall help you in re-using written components in your next projects.

framework current documentation level ?
often low for most projects, you must take care of it

features you need ?
you may look at your projects needs ( or near future needs ) and see if the Framework can handle them. Some are GUI oriented, special-effects oriented, Javascript centrics, communication only oriented. None will completely cover your requirements. What is the complexity degree in making the framework evolve ? can you add your own features in the framework ? will you help committers ? Can you mashup multiple Frameworks ?

How long will it last ?
Most projects are companies own projet spin-off. The Framework evolution depends on their ability to maintain and make the project evolve. A good user community is important as well as talking to developers when needed further functionalities.
Taking care of sponsors and the framework current uses in production web sites, is a good start in guessing if the Framework will last years or will be stopped in six months.

What sort of support ?
Is there a community support ? commercial support ? test reactivity while testing it.

How steep is the learning curve for the framework?
Can your team handle such a technology. Many developers are reluctant to Javascript . Can they handle such a change, is the Framework simple to understand ?

Who are my visitors ?
It seems that a very light framework is required for a public site. If your visitors need to upload a large Javascript API, they may not visit further your website, depending on your page’s download times. When working on intranets, or professionnal services, it may be acceptable that the first access to the application may be longer, moreover when the website is used daily. Also think about on-demand Javascript and Javascript compression.

Ajax , Not A New Technology Is It

When you firstly listen about Ajax as a new technology all what jumps to your mind is just “oops, I gotta learn again !!” , but if just you take only a snapshot about the hints introducing this technology you will discover that in term of that it

is not a technology that erase the others appeared before it but its a technology that enhance your abilities in the old technologies you were taught and gained experience using it years over years before , i feel satisfied when I know that because i still believe that we havent took all the advantages of the present
technologies we are still using , still the open source war producing more and more weapons and bringing the goods from the olds we always use .

And when we come into more details to explain “Ajax” , we must firstly include that the word Ajax stands for “Asynchronous Javascript and XML” , from this short explanation driven from th previous title , we can conclude that Ajax appears not as a standalone technology but in other way its a technology combining the previous once for more sufficient output , from my previous readings I was believing that XML is not just a huge technology as its inventors claim , it was just a markup language with something like an open source
declarations which offered the markup programmers a new facilities and brought out many technologies such as voIP to appear, but still we can see that XML cannot stand alone without another technologies to assist in producing its output , till the past years XML was just an intelligent data storage language utility , and by the help of other technologies like HTML and CSS it has found its way to the hands of the hungry developers , its ease of use was one of the reasons which allowed the new generations of technologies such as Ajax we are talking about right now to appear , Ajax was firstly developed by Google in year 2005 , Google was aiming by the introduction of this technology to combine the advancements of features beside the ease of use of the Javascript with the ultimate compatibility of the XML as a database system which  works with any other available data manipulation systems , plus its acceptance to any new declarations for data arrays , by the introduction of this technology , Google have found a new way to introduce an efficient  employment of the unused system resources of both Javascript and XML after they started to come nearer to their declining stage after a long maturity aera .

Why would I care about Microsoft?

Whenever I mention in a crowd that I use free software, someone always seems to comment that I must hate Microsoft. When I add that I write about free software for a living, someone is apt to call me a Microsoft-basher. In either case, the implication seems to be that my identity is defined by Microsoft, and, perhaps, is composed of an unhealthy amount of envy. When I reply calmly that Microsoft is mostly irrelevant to me, the people who made these comments seem disbelieving, or at least disappointed. But why would I care about what Microsoft is doing, beyond a mild interest in news that doesn’t particularly concern me?

Oh, I know that some free software users seem fixated on denouncing Microsoft at every opportunity. You can find them on any forum with a free software slant, writing about “Micro$oft” and referring to Windoze, and seeing a deep conspiracy in every move that the company makes. Mostly, I suspect, these users are in their teens, and either passionately young or anxious to sound as though they belong.

Personally, though, my teen years are long gone. These days, I tend to hold my beliefs with a quieter but no less deep conviction.

Yet, even when I was younger, I could never rally more than an abstract dislike about Microsoft. Sure, I object to a monopoly. I’d have to be an idiot not to think that the constant anti-trust cases brought against the company world-wide are coincidences. And my personal sense of aesthetics and quality revolt against anything that is designed poorly and intended to keep the user ignorant.

But I’ve never felt much need to convert others to my beliefs, and I certainly wouldn’t be rude to Windows users. I’ve even chatted amiably with a number of Microsoft employees; some of them are pleasant people.

My move to free software was not a rejection of Microsoft so much as a discovery of a philosophy that was in sync with the rest of my social principles, and a decision to go with the superior software.

Since I made that decision, I’ve generally had a small partition with Windows on at least one machine. But it’s been kept mostly for games, and months sometimes passed between the times I booted it. For the last eight months, I didn’t have a copy of Windows running anywhere in the house, and that only changed because my new laptop came with one. I immediately minimized the partition and allocated four-fifths of the hard drive to Fedora 7. Probably, I’ll only boot into Windows when I’m doing comparison articles. I certainly don’t need it for anything else.

Under such circumstances, why would I care about Microsoft one way or the other?

The only time I’m interested at all is when a Microsoft executive makes some far-fetched statement about free software or makes a tentative attempts to interact with the free and open source software community. Yet, even then, the most I can muster is a mild professional interest. Mostly, Microsoft interacts with free software-based companies, while I prefer to use community GNU/Linux distributions, so on a personal level, I don’t care much.

I suppose that one reason people assume that I must spend my time conducting Three Minutes’ Hate sessions against Microsoft is that I earn a living from free software, so all the related issues must be of absorbing interest to me. But, the truth is, I usually leave writing about Microsoft-related issues to other people. It’s a beat that I prefer not to cover.

Anyway, even those who do write about Microsoft are rarely rabid about it. They’re professionals. They work eight hours or more a day with free software, and very few people are capable of sustaining a fierce hatred for forty hours a week. Nor are editors especially interested in paeans of hate, even if some of them have a fondness for stirring up controversy. For these reasons, if you are passionately anti-Microsoft going into free software journalism, you either don’t last long or mellow.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that the main reason people assume that I hate Microsoft is the poverty of their own imagination. For many people, Microsoft is such a large fixture in their world that — love or loathe it — the idea of not caring what the company does is almost inconceivable. They seem unable to comprehend that, among other things, the free and open source communities are refuges where – unlike the larger world – Microsoft’s latest doings or Windows’ new security patch are irrelevant.

Frankly, the obsession with Microsoft is theirs, not mine. There are days, even weeks sometimes, when I don’t think of Microsoft one way or the other. Believe it or not, mostly Microsoft just doesn’t enter into my life.

11 Hurt During Filming of Cruise Movie

025.jpgEleven extras were injured when they fell out of a truck during filming of a movie starring Tom Cruise, police said Monday.

The 11 were taken to hospital as filming stopped on the movie, provisionally titled “Valkyrie,” which stars Cruise as Germany’s most famous anti-Hitler plotter, Col. Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg.

All but one of the 11 were treated and released. The extent of the 11th man’s injuries from Sunday’s accident was not clear. Another person who fell out of the truck was unhurt.

Germany’s Bild daily reported that Cruise was not involved in the weekend filming.

Police said in a statement that a bolt on a side panel of the truck apparently came loose as the vehicle turned.

The accident happened during filming of scenes around the Finance Ministry in Berlin, which was once the Nazis’ aviation ministry.

Cruise’s casting has attracted controversy in Germany because he is one of the best-known adherents of Scientology, which the German government considers a commercial enterprise that takes advantage of vulnerable people.

Some critics maintain that one of its members should not be playing what some consider one of the Nazi era’s few heroes.

Vick’s career over?

018.jpgWhile many people in and around the NFL are wondering if Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick ever will play in the league again, former Green Bay general manager Ron Wolf is wondering why not.

“If he pays his debt to society, why shouldn’t he get another chance?” asked Wolf, who was the engineer of Green Bay’s Super Bowl championship team in the 1996 season. “Maybe I don’t understand something in all of this, but you’re supposed to get a second chance in this country.”

However, according to interviews with several NFL executives, Wolf is in the minority. Four other general managers and/or other personnel executives said they thought a return by Vick would be problematic.

“Yeah, that’s true, but it’s a different time, a different place, a different set of circumstances,” said a general manager who asked not to be identified.

On Monday, Vick’s attorney Billy Martin announced that the quarterback will plead guilty to federal dogfighting conspiracy charges. Conditions of the terms are unknown, but Vick faces up to five years in prison.

The most damning evidence made public against Vick came Friday when co-defendants Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips also pleaded guilty. In their plea, Peace and Phillips admitted to killing eight dogs in April at Vick’s property in Virginia and said that Vick participated in the death of the animals. The animals were destroyed because they failed to perform well enough in testing to see if they were “game” enough to be good fighters.

“Every time you read about this story, it makes you want to take a shower,” another unnamed general manager said.

The Vick issue is layered with questions, such as how long he might serve in prison, how long the NFL will suspend him once he officially enters his plea Aug. 27 and whether the Falcons will go after approximately $28 million the team paid him in bonus money.

Still, the bottom line comes down to whether he’ll get another chance. Adding to the complexity of the situation, said one general manager, is that Vick plays quarterback. Will some NFL team ever want a convicted animal killer and liar to be the face of a franchise?

“You’re not talking about just anybody on your football team,” the GM said. “You’re talking about the leader of your team, the most recognizable player on your team, the guy who you normally market the team around and try to get the fans excited about.

“Do you really think you’re ever going to be able to get people to put their arms around that guy again? Maybe, but I don’t think I’d be able to pull it off. We’re not talking about just football here. We’re talking about marketing, profile, what your sponsors think.”

At the same time, Wolf contended that crime is crime and that other players have been found guilty of activities seemingly just as serious.

“We’ve had a lot of people in this league do a lot of bad things, and they still got a chance,” Wolf said. “Leonard Little killed someone (while drunk driving). Jamal Lewis went to prison (in connection to) selling drugs. Are you telling me that killing eight dogs is worse than killing a human being? … Yes, this is bad, but are you really telling me that he doesn’t deserve a chance to play again when other people have committed crimes and come back?”

Then again, Wolf is an example of someone who might have the power to make it happen.

“It’s going to take an owner who has big ones or a GM who has some (trophies) on his (side) to make that work,” another general manager said. Since Vick still is under contract with the Falcons, executives from other teams are not allowed to talk about him from an employment standpoint.

Oakland managing general partner Al Davis and Dallas owner Jerry Jones were among those mentioned as owners who might take a chance on Vick if and when Atlanta lets him go.

“Yeah, it would have to be someone like one of those guys,” a team executive said. “Just ask yourself, ‘How are you going to sell that one as a GM to your owner and his wife?’ ”

The additional issue with Vick is that well before he got in trouble, there were concerns about whether he could become a polished quarterback. Atlanta hired coach Bobby Petrino this offseason with the goal of concluding if Vick ever would harness his impressive talent.

“The fact that he’s only 27 and he’s still going to be a great athlete in a year or two is going to help him, but now he’s behind for two years,” the GM said. “I wasn’t sure how good a quarterback he was before. What’s he going to be in two years?”

Report: Rowling writing detective novel

0011.jpgLONDON - J.K. Rowling has been spotted at cafes in Scotland working on a detective novel, a British newspaper reported Saturday.

The Sunday Times newspaper quoted Ian Rankin, a fellow author and neighbor of Rowling’s, as saying the creator of the “Harry Potter” books is turning to crime fiction.

“My wife spotted her writing her Edinburgh criminal detective novel,” the newspaper, which was available late Saturday, quoted Rankin as telling a reporter at an Edinburgh literary festival.

“It is great that she has not abandoned writing or Edinburgh cafes,” said Rankin, who is known for his own police novels set in the historic Scottish city.

Rowling famously wrote initial drafts of the Potter story in the Scottish city’s cafes. Back then, she was a struggling single mother who wrote in cafes to save on the heating bill at home.

Now she’s Britain’s richest woman — worth $1 billion, according to Forbes magazine — and her seven Potter books have sold more than 335 million copies worldwide.

In an interview with The Associated Press last month, Rowling said she believed she was unlikely to repeat the success of the Potter series, but confirmed she had plans to work on new books.

“I’ll do exactly what I did with Harry — I’ll write what I really want to write,” Rowling said.

The office of Rowling’s literary agent, Christopher Little, was not immediately available to comment late Saturday.

Auto Makers’ Total Recalls

024.jpgAs if Ford weren’t saddled with enough problems, on Aug. 3 the Detroit carmaker issued a massive recall of 3.6 million vehicles, citing a defective cruise control switch that could lead to fires. Together with the nearly 7 million vehicles the company has already recalled for the same reason since 1999, it’s the largest automotive recall ever recorded.

More From BusinessWeek.com:

• In Pictures: Most Recalled Cars, 2007

• In Pictures: Most Dependable Cars, 2007

• In Pictures: Most Gratifying Vehicles, 2007

Ford is one of many automakers feeling the sting of quality assurance problems over recent years. The number of vehicles recalled in the U.S. peaked in 2004 at 30.8 million, falling off to 11.2 million in 2006, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the division of the Transportation Dept. that oversees and tracks manufacturer recalls. But the number of recall issuances last year was nearly as high as it has ever been, and the wide range of manufacturers at fault–including brands known for high safety standards, like Toyota and Volkswagen — may have buyers thinking twice before they drive off the car lot.

Owners of new Fords needn’t sweat this recall, however. It only affects certain cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans of model years 1994 through 2002, including Lincoln Town Car, Ford Crown Victoria, Ford Explorer, and F-Series pickups. A spokesperson from Ford wouldn’t estimate how many vehicles the company expects to service in the recall, but says that “take-rates in the industry of about [two-thirds] are not rare.”

Toyota, a Recall Leader?

It’s not just older models that get recalled. Frequently car manufacturers, or the NHTSA, discover a problem with a car shortly after it’s released to the public. For the past two years, BusinessWeek has compiled lists of the most recalled new cars–and for both years, the results were surprising.

While General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, and Ford led the list in 2006, Toyota saw a departure from its quality-obsessed character–recalling nearly 1.5 million vehicles worldwide, spanning every single model line produced that year.

This year the bombshell on the list was Volkswagen of America, which recalled more than a million New Beetles because of a faulty brake light switch (in both the 2007 and older lines), and some 58,000 Passats for a fragile vacuum line. The company predicts that only about 30% to 35% of the vehicles in this recall are faulty but advises all owners of affected models to visit their local dealer.

VW’s Glass Is Half Full

This comes at a critical time for Volkswagen of America. The company lost $900,000 in 2006 and about the same in 2005, with sales of the New Beetle and Passat off 20% and 30% respectively.

While recalls heap unexpected costs on carmakers–from parts and labor to reengineering to more indirect costs like brand damage–Volkswagen sees the upside potential. “Whenever a customer has a negative experience it could have some detriment, but there’s also an opportunity to take care of the customer,” says Keith Price, a spokesperson for the company. Volkswagen also uses recalls as an opportunity to reevaluate its approach to vehicle development, as well as its relationships with parts suppliers.

Of course, not all recalls are a big deal. More than 18,000 owners of the 2007 Jeep Compass were told this year that their owner’s manual didn’t “contain the required higher rollover risk warning information.” That recall probably won’t save too many lives–more likely it will help keep Jeep manufacturer Chrysler out of court.
