Tibetans attack police station, 93 monks arrested

In this April 6, 2008 file photo, Tibetan monks practice debating in Longwu AP - In this April 6, 2008 file photo, Tibetan monks practice debating in Longwu Monastery in Repkong, western …

BEIJING - Hundreds of Tibetans attacked a police station and government officials in northwestern China despite heightened security, prompting the arrests Sunday of nearly 100 monks, state media reported.

Six of those arrested for alleged involvement in the attack were caught by police while 89 others turned themselves in, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. All but two were monks, it said.

The protest appeared to be in response to the disappearance of a Tibetan who escaped from police custody in Qinghai province, Xinhua said.

According to a Tibetan exile, the protest involved as many as 2,000 people and was sparked by the apparent suicide of a monk being investigated for unfurling a Tibetan flag.

Xinhua said several hundred people - including nearly 100 monks from the Ragya Monastery - attacked the police station in Ragya, a township in the Tibetan prefecture of Golog, on Saturday, assaulting policemen and government staff.

Some officials were injured slightly in the assault, Xinhua said, without elaborating.

A man who answered the phone at Qinghai’s public security department said he had not heard about the attack or the arrests. Phone calls to other police departments and government offices in the area rang unanswered.

The violence is the latest known incidence of unrest following a bomb explosion Monday in an unoccupied police station in predominantly Tibetan Ganzi prefecture in Sichuan province. The explosion shattered the building’s windows but no injuries were reported.

In February, Tibetan advocacy groups said a thousand monks gathered at a monastery in Sichuan province’s Aba county to protest a ban on celebrating a traditional prayer festival called Monlam. One monk doused himself with gasoline and set himself ablaze.

The violence on Saturday began after a man accused of supporting Tibetan independence escaped from police custody and went missing, Xinhua said.

It cited authorities as saying the man fled from the Ragya police station after asking to go to the washroom, prompting a manhunt. It cited a witness as saying he was seen swimming in the Yellow River.

A former resident of the area who now lives in Dharmsala, India, said the protesters were angry because they believed the man, a 28-year-old monk named Tashi Sangpo, jumped in the river to commit suicide after fleeing.

“When Tashi was being interrogated by the officials, he asked their permission to go to the toilet. He then went out and jumped into the Yellow River,” the source said on condition of anonymity, citing fear of reprisals against his family still living in China. “The dead body is yet to be found.”

The exile, who said he received the information from people in Ragya, said 500 monks from the monastery protested outside the local administration office and the group swelled to about 2,000 as others from the village joined.

He said Tashi Sangpo was being investigated by police because he unfurled a Tibetan flag on the roof of the monastery on March 10, the anniversary of the start of a 1959 abortive Tibetan revolt against Chinese rule, and distributed pamphlets on the street urging unified protests against Chinese rule. The Tibetan flag is banned in China.

It was difficult to independently verify the account because government departments could not be reached Sunday. Communication is also spotty in the areas and residents usually will not talk for fear of official retaliation.

Dharmsala is the seat of the Dalai Lama’s self-proclaimed government-in-exile and the destination of many Tibetans who flee China.

Security in Tibetan areas has been tightened in recent weeks as Beijing tried to head off trouble ahead of sensitive anniversaries this month. March 14 marked the one-year anniversary of anti-government riots in Lhasa, Tibet’s regional capital, while March 17 marked 50 years since the Dalai Lama escaped into exile in India after Chinese troops crushed the Tibetan revolt.

China claims Tibet has always been part of its territory, but many Tibetans say the Himalayan region was virtually independent for centuries and that Beijing’s tight control is draining them of their culture and identity.

Pope decries African wars at Mass for 1 million

LUANDA, Angola - Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Mass for the largest gathering of his African pilgrimage Sunday, telling a crowd on the outskirts of this seaside capital that reconciliation on the war-ravaged continent would come only with a “change of heart, a new way of thinking.”

The Vatican said as many as 1 million people turned out on the dusty field near a cement factory to hear the pope at the last major event of his seven-day trip, which began Tuesday in Cameroon.

Speaking from a tented pink altar, the pope said evils in Africa had “reduced the poor to slavery and deprived future generations of the resources needed to create a more solid and just society.”

“How true it is that war can destroy everything of value,” said Benedict, wearing a pink cape and mopping his sweaty brow with a white handkerchief kept inside his sleeve.

Later he was scheduled to meet with representatives of women’s rights groups to praise the role of women in African society.

Angolans have been enslaved, subjugated and at war almost nonstop since Portuguese colonizers brought the first Catholic missionaries in 1491. Many of the slaves taken to Brazil, for example, came from Angola.

The Catholic Church was an ally of the colonizers who discriminated against the people until independence from Portugal in 1975, when civil war erupted, in part fueled by the country’s oil and diamond wealth.

Some 15,000 died, including missionaries, before the war ended in 2002, and the scars still are evident among the many people who lost limbs in one of the most heavily mined countries in the world.

A Marxist revolution also has left scars, though the country’s president for 30 years, Eduardo dos Santos, abandoned communism and improved relations with the church starting in the late 1980s.

Critics say last year’s massive election victory was marred by fraud and corruption and that the pope must beware of allowing his visit, sponsored by the state, to be seen as legitimizing an authoritarian regime. The bishops in Angola twice have denounced the government for leaving its people mired in poverty while leaders enrich themselves off oil and diamonds.

Since he arrived on Friday from Cameroon, the pope has met with dos Santos and spoken out against corruption in Africa, the continent with the fastest-growing Catholic population in the world.

Before he said Mass on Sunday, Benedict clasped his hands, as if in prayer, and offered his condolences to the families of two 20-year-old women trampled to death in a stampede at a Luanda stadium before a youth event he addressed on Saturday.

He also wished a speedy recovery to some 40 people injured in the crush. Dozens of others collapsed and were treated at the site for heat exhaustion.

Later, the Vatican’s No. 2 official, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, blessed the bodies of the two victims, laid out under white sheets at Josina Machel Hospital. Accompanied by Angola’s Foreign Minister Assuncao Does Anjos, the cardinal visited with injured victims.

State radio appealed to people to take water and food to Sunday’s Mass. People also carried parasols and stools amid the hooting cars and motorbikes making their way to see the pope. Some men hoisted children onto their shoulders and mothers strapped babies to their backs.

Even before he landed in Africa, the pope provoked protests after he told reporters on his chartered Alitalia jet that condoms were not the answer to Africa’s severe AIDS epidemic, suggesting that sexual behavior was the issue.

He condemned sexual violence against women, but also chided the 45 African countries including Angola that have approved abortion in cases of rape or incest or when a mother’s life is in danger.

In his final appearance on Sunday’s schedule, Benedict made a strong appeal for respect for women’s rights in a speech to some 1,000 women in a Luanda church annex.

“It is nearly always the woman who maintains intact human dignity, defends the family and protects cultural and religious values,” the pontiff said, lamenting that the importance of family “is not given the consideration it deserves.”

Treasury’s toxic asset plan could cost $1 trillion

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration’s latest attempt to tackle the banking crisis and get loans flowing to families and businesses rely on a new government entity, the Public Investment Corp. to help purchase as much as $1 trillion in toxic assets on banks’ books.

The plan that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner intends to announce Monday aims to use the resources of the $700 billion bank bailout fund, the Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

The initiative will seek to entice private investors, including big hedge funds, to participate by offering billions of dollars in low-interest loans to finance the purchases and also sharing risks if the assets fall further in value.

When Geithner released the initial outlines of the administration’s overhaul of the bank rescue program on Feb. 10, the markets took a nosedive. The Dow Jones industrial average plunged by 380 points as investors expressed disappointment about a lack of details.

Christina Romer, head of the Council of Economic Advisers, said Sunday that it’s important for investors to know that the administration is bringing a full array of programs to confront the problem.

“I don’t think Wall Street is expecting the silver bullet,” she said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“This is one more piece. It’s a crucial piece to get these toxic assets off, but it is just part of it and there will be more to come,” she said.

Also in the coming week Geithner is expected to disclose the administration’s proposal to overhaul bank regulations to try to prevent a repeat of the financial crisis.

Reality TV star Jade Goody dies after cancer fight

LONDON - Jade Goody, a dental assistant turned reality-TV star whose whirlwind journey from poverty to celebrity to tragedy became a national soap opera and morality tale in Britain, has died.

The 27-year-old had cancer and died in her sleep early Sunday at her home in Essex, southeast England, her publicist Max Clifford said.

Goody gained fame at 21 in 2002, when she joined the reality television show “Big Brother,” in which contestants live together for weeks and are constantly filmed. Loud and brash, she became a highly divisive star - initially mocked as an ignorant slob, then celebrated as a forthright everywoman by a hungry tabloid press.

It was a pattern of praise and condemnation that followed her for the rest of her life. Goody became a national touchstone who sparked debate about race, class and celebrity in Britain.

For some, Goody was a survivor who had overcome a tough childhood in a poor part of London.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Sunday that Goody used her fame to help others.

“She was a courageous woman both in life and death and the whole country have admired her determination to provide a bright future for her children,” Brown said in a statement.

“She will be remembered fondly by all who knew her and her family can be extremely proud of the work she has done to raise awareness of cervical cancer which will benefit thousands of women across the U.K.”

Though many praised Goody in recent months for the way in which she handled her illness, she was mocked in the press during her stint on “Big Brother” for her weight, her big mouth and her apparent lack of general knowledge - she branded the English region of East Anglia “East Angular,” and asked whether it was abroad.

She didn’t win the show, but she did become a celebrity, earning millions through television and magazine appearances, an autobiography, a perfume and a series of exercise videos.

It was during a follow-up stint on a celebrity version of “Big Brother” in 2007 that Goody was labeled a racist bully for her treatment of another contestant, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty. Goody bad-mouthed Shetty’s cooking of Indian food, mocked her accent and referred to her as “Shilpa Poppadom.” While complaints against the show skyrocketed, so did ratings.

Goody’s treatment of Shetty sparked anger in India and Britain - even becoming the topic of debate during a House of Commons question-and-answer session with then Prime Minister Tony Blair. A major sponsor suspended its advertising deal with “Celebrity Big Brother,” and a chain of perfume shops pulled a Goody-endorsed fragrance, ironically named “Shh…”

After television viewers voted to evict Goody from the show, Goody - herself of mixed race - insisted she wasn’t a racist. “I argue like that with everybody. It wasn’t just because of the color of her skin that I was that aggressive,” she said during an interview on Britain’s GMTV.

After the eviction, the Indian Tourism Office invited Goody to travel to the country. She did, visiting charity projects and later agreeing to appear on an Indian version of the show.

“The people of India have only seen a small part of me and I’d like to show them that there is more to me,” Goody said. “I’m a mother of two, a businesswoman. I can’t be all that bad.”

It was during filming of the show in the summer of 2008 that Goody received a diagnosis of cervical cancer by telephone from a doctor in Britain. The camera captured the deeply personal moment, which was shown repeatedly on TV in Britain, though not in India.

The progress of her illness was chronicled in detail in the tabloid press and weekly magazines, to the unease of many.

“Goody isn’t rich or famous because she won the lottery: she’s rich and famous because we bought all those papers and magazines and ghosted books with her on the cover, because we watched her television series, because we cheered when she was good and booed when she was bad, because we sat around discussing her over lunch,” wrote columnist India Knight in The Sunday Times. “Now she’s dying, she’s making us all feel bad so we want her to go away, like a broken toy that’s stopped being fun.”

In February, a bald and frail Goody, married fiancee Jack Tweed in an elaborate event staged at an elegant countryside hotel outside London. She reportedly sold the photos for more than $1 million.

Goody defended being paid for interviews and photo shoots.

“People will say I’m doing this for money,” she said. “And they’re right, I am. But not to buy flash cars or big houses - it’s for my sons’ future if I’m not here. I don’t want my kids to have the same miserable, drug-blighted, poverty-stricken childhood I did.”

Before her rise to fame, Goody worked for a period as a dental nurse. She had an unhappy childhood in a poor south London neighborhood. Her father was a heroin addict who served jail time for robbery and died in 2005, her mother a former crack addict who lost the use of an arm in a motorcycle accident.

While many empathized with Goody as she underwent surgery and chemotherapy in the public eye - filming part of the experience for another television series - she still inspired vitriol in others. A Web site was even set up, devoted to predicting when she would die.

In February 2009 Goody’s publicist said the cancer had spread to her liver, bowel and groin.

Goody is survived by Tweed and her two sons Bobby and Freddie, with an ex-boyfriend, television presenter Jeff Brazier. She also is survived by her mother, Jackiey Budden.

Budden told reporters Sunday: “Family and friends would like privacy at last.”

Matthew Robinson, 2nd Baron Rokeby

Matthew Robinson, 2nd Baron Rokeby (1712 - 30 November 1800) was an English eccentric nobleman who preferred a watery environment to a dry one.

Lord Rokeby was born Matthew Robinson in a Scottish family that had settled in Kent. His family gained the title from King George II. Robinson became a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, briefly became a Whig and supported the accession of William of Orange. He travelled widely but eventually settled alone near Hythe, Kent.

When his father Septimus Robinson died in 1754, Matthew inherited, among other things, a family estate at Mount Morris near Canterbury. He proceeded to cultivate his estate and represented Canterbury in the Parliament. He inherited the title of Lord Rokeby in 1794 after death of his cousin, Richard Robinson, Bishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland.

Lord Rokeby became an enthusiastic supporter of baths during a holiday in the spa town of Aix-la-Chapelle. When he returned to Kent, he began to make daily trips to the seashore to swim in salt water regardless of the weather. He preferred this environment in such an extent that his servant had to persuade him to come home. Sometimes he fainted and had to be rescued. He had a hut built for him on the sands at Hythe and drinking fountains along his route to the beach. He walked all the way and let his servant follow him in the carriage with full livery. If he found people drinking from a fountain, he gave them a half-crown coin.

He also let his beard grow, which was against the contemporary fashion. Eventually it was so thick that it stuck out under his arms and could be seen from behind. In a couple of years he decided to build a swimming pool in his mansion - it was built under glass and was heated by sun. There he spent hours at the time, preferably alone. He refused to have a fire in his house even in the coldest weather.

His increased isolation bred rumors, including one that he was a cannibal or ate only raw meat - when he ate mainly beef tea and nibbled at venison. He also refused to see any doctors. As for church service, he claimed that God was best worshipped at natural altars of the earth, the sea and the sky - not to mention that the sermons were boring.

When Lord Rokeby did indeed agree to accept visitors, he might “entertain” them with lengthy, boring poems. He arranged a sumptuous meal for Prince William of Gloucester but ate very little himself. He very rarely visited the court and then was an embarrassment to his socialite sister, Mrs Elizabeth Montagu. When he stayed at the Chequers Inn at Lenham in 1796 so he could vote in the general election, curious locals took him for a Turk. He never married.

Lord Rokeby died in December 1800; peacefully in his bed on dry land.

bill burr

Bill Burr (aka Billy Burr) is an American stand-up comedian, born June 10, 1968 in Canton, Massachusetts.

In 1995, he moved to New York City and lived there for eight months. He then moved to Los Angeles, California, where he worked on a number of film and television projects. He returned to New York in 1999 and moved back to Los Angeles in 2008, where he currently resides.

He performs over three hundred shows annually, had two movies released in 2006, and has performed on The Late Show with David Letterman. In 2004, he began working on Chappelle’s Show, and in September 2005, his HBO One Night Stand special aired. Along with many other projects, Burr has also been a guest comedian on the Bob and Tom Show as well as on the Opie and Anthony Show on XM Satellite Radio, sometimes sitting in when third member Jim Norton is away. He has also performed on the Comedy Central Presents show.

In 2006, he gained notoriety among comedic circles for an incident in Camden, New Jersey as a part of Opie and Anthony’s Traveling Virus Comedy Tour. Prior to Burr, comedian Dom Irrera was booed and wasn’t given an opportunity to perform his material. He embarrassingly walked off. Burr, the following comedian, criticized the audience as shallow. Booing mercilessly in retaliation at Burr (never giving him a true opportunity to perform his material), fought back. He abandoned his scripted material entirely, proceeding to hurl profanity-laced insult after insult toward the crowd (mostly from nearby Philadelphia). He incorporated historic Philadelphia references into the tirade. He continued in this off-the-cuff manner for over ten minutes, and was treated to a lengthy standing ovation as he left the stage.

On December 16, 2006, Burr hosted a three-hour radio show on Opie and Anthony’s XM radio channel program The Virus (channel 202) titled “Uninformed with Bill Burr & Joe DeRosa” from 9pm-12am. The second Uninformed show aired February 10, 2007 from 9pm-12am.

In September 2007 Burr signed with Colorado independent label What Are Records?. His debut album Emotionally Unavailable: Expanded Edition was released October 16, 2007.

Emotionally Unavailable carries content previously available only in Burr’s stand-up shows. It features a completely unedited set with Burr covering topics from rednecks to inadvertent racism to relationship books to crazy people on the subway. The Expanded Edition augments that album with previously unreleased highlights from a different tour - the Houston stop of the I’m Rich Biatch Tour which Bill co-headlined with Chappelle’s Show cast mates Charlie Murphy and Donnell Rawlings. Much of the material from this tour later turned up on Burr’s HBO stand-up special.

As with other comics associated with The Opie & Anthony Show, in 2008, Bill’s voice was featured in the game Grand Theft Auto IV. In the game, Bill plays a member of a biker gang in the mission “No Love Lost”. In 2009, he reprised his role in the game’s expansion pack The Lost and Damned.

In the story I am busy plotting, names are very significant. Some of the characters have intense relationships with their names.
